MI-Mail Anti-Spam

One of our customers recently contacted us with internal network problems, they were experiencing a drastic drop in network performance and bandwidth drops. After investigating the problem, we found that their email server had been hijacked by a email relay bug. Users themselves were getting between 200-300 spam emails per day. all of these things together effects network performance.

ISP's and companies around the world are spending millions of dollars in an effort to eliminate or at least reduce the problem, but the problem is not an easy fix, until now. The reason it is hard to fix is because each spam mail, or nearly every spam email is unique and for the most case there is no commonality except that they are unwanted.

The spammer uses a program that creates each message independently where each message is different from the previous. Because of this, an anti spam program can not detect any similarities in the message. If they were all from one email address or IP address, then problem solved. Shown below is a sample email header. As an email user, I may get 50 emails from this sender each day and there will be no similarity. I could flag the first one as spam, but because the next one is so different, a standard spam filter will let it through.

Tried and tested, the MI-Mail Anti-Spam program monitors your email account and runs it filters before your email program connects and downloads the email messages. The AS program is not an add-in for outlook or outlook express, but an independent program that runs in the background. 

It works by first importing your address book and adds them all to an accepted list. It also requires that you enter a keyword that a user places in the subject field. When your account gets an email message where the email address is not found in your list, or the keyword is not found in the subject field. it deletes the email message from the server. BUT, before it deletes it, it downloads the message and sticks the entire message into the programs database where you can review it at your convenience. 

When you review the list of blocked messages, you can add the sender if you want, or open the message for further review. During setup, you enter how many days the message can stay in the database before it is automatically deleted by the AS program.

The final result is your outlook, outlook express or other email program will be 100% spam free. The only way that spam can get through is if you leave your email program open and it downloads your email before the AS program can filter it. To over come this, you can configure your email program to check for mail every 5 to 10 minutes or so. You could also open the email program only when needed. The icon in the system tray will tell you how many good emails are ready for pickup by moving the mouse over it.  Good / Bad

The AS program is designed to provide service for as many accounts as needed. The only stipulation is that you will need to import the address book for each account. The accepted list uses a single list that does not differentiate between accounts. 

The AS program will NOT work with web based mail such as YAHOO, MSN, HOTMAIL etc.
